What causes it

Heat escaping into the attic melts roof snow, which refreezes at the cold eaves and backs water up under the shingles.

What we check

We look for staining, prior ice-dam damage, attic insulation gaps and ventilation, especially on north-facing bluff homes.

Why it matters

Ice dams drive water into walls and ceilings — recurring damage that signals an insulation and ventilation problem, not just a cold winter.
